My previous blog about "going to town" on Saturdays reminded me of the snack/drink combo we would always have on our way to town. We would buy a small bag of salty peanuts and an ice cold Mountain Dew. Next, we would pour the peanuts into our Mountain Dew. I haven't done this in a while but I sure am craving it at this very moment. There is something about the salty taste from the peanuts mixed with the very sweet taste of Mountain Dew that was simply awesome! Go ahead. Give it a try. You know that you're curious about it now. If you've got any southern blood at all, I promise you'll love it! (Of course, you'll need to brush your teeth good afterwards!)
Expressions of a southern gal. So, why dontcha pull a chair and sit a spell while I rant and rave about my little ol' life in Tennessee. Hope y'all enjoy!

Going to Town
It's Saturday. That means we get to "go to town" and buy all the necessities southern living requires. It's a road trip for us since we live an hour drive away from a real city. In fact, the closest place to even get milk or bread is at least 25 minutes away. So, before I get home from work, I had better darn make sure I got everything I need for the night. And if I can't get it from the little grocery store on my way home, it becomes an item on the Saturday list.
I just love that we still call it "going to town." When I was a little girl, mom would take us to town every Saturday. Of course, by the end of the day, she would swear that she was never taking us back. Then the next Saturday we would do it again. Back then, K-Mart was our first stop. We would have lunch in their cafeteria and then walk through every aisle in the store. After K-Mart, we would go to Sears. This was always a treat because they had an escalator and a candy store. Mom would let us pick our own candy out and I always chose the candy fish. I have such wonderful memories of our trips to town as a child. It's a little different today. We go to Wal-Mart instead of K-Mart. We have lunch at McDonald's. But we do still go to sears and they have an escalator. The candy store is in the mall now and they don't even have candy fish. Nope, it's not like it used to be but at least it's still "going to town."

Clover Flower Jewelry
Remember when clover flower jewelry was in style? If you are about my age, then that would have been about 30 years ago. I didn't have to go to a jewelry store. Nope, I stepped right out into my back yard and there was a field of gems just waiting to be assembled. The process was somewhat tedious and time consuming but time passed rather slow at that point in life. I would spend hours designing my own necklaces, bracelets, tiaras and anklets. The design was simple. Semi-split the stem to create an opening just large enough for another stem to slide through. Slide the next flower through (stem first) until the flower itself created a "latch" like appearance. Repeat until desired length has been reached. I don't recall how I actually connected the two ends once I reached the desired length. Perhaps there is someone else out there who customized in clover flower jewelry that could clarify this for me. Nonetheless, those were the good old days filled with summer sunshine, wide open fields, a creative mind and clover flower jewelry.

Gas Cap
The very first thing I want to point out about us southern folks is our generous and never-ending supply of hospitality! Why, just today, I had to pull into the gas station and fill 'er up before headin' on home. Silly ol' me, got distracted catching up on the gossip with a fellow fill 'er upper and forgot to put the gas cap back on. Luckily I wut'n going too far (just pulling out of the way for the next customer), and a nice young gentlemen ran my gas cap over to me. That sweetie pie saved my butt. I would've been madder than a hornet if I'd a gotten home and figured out I'd left the gas cap at the pump. You see, we southern folks look out for one anuther like that. And dontcha know that I invited that sweetie pie over for dinner to show my appreciation for saving my gas cap. He said he'd be on over here directly so I've fixed a big pot of beans and the biggest pan of cornbread you've ever seen. I might be fatter than hog on slaughter day by tomorrow but I'm a sure gonna eat good tonight. Oh and lordy, lordy, gonna have plenty of gas tonight.
